The Flint Powers Catholic Girls’ Swim Team finished in 5th place at the 2015 Saginaw Valley League Girls Swimming and Diving Championships held at Saginaw Valley State University. Powers junior Sarah Kirtek swam away with two Conference Championships for the Chargers, and every Powers swimmer who qualified to swim in the finals, swam season-bests.
Kirtek won the 100 Butterfly in a time of 1:01.09 – just off the best she swam Thursday in the preliminaries. In the 100 Breaststroke, Kirtek was seeded second after Thursday’s prelims. After the first 50 Saturday, she had it won. Kirtek posted an all-time best time of 1:10.97, and won by nearly two seconds. Said Kirtek, “I don’t know where that came from. I was still a little tired after the 200 Free Relay, but I was feeling pretty good after the first 50, so I just told myself, ‘legs activate!’ ”
Sophomore Allie Dasky had two top-ten finishes on the day. Dasky finished 5th in the 50 Free and 9th in the 100 Free. Freshman Emily Moriartey had a 6th place finish in the 100 Back and took 11th in the 200 IM. Junior Sydney Lawrence finished 9th in the 50 Free, and 12th in the 100 Fly.
All three Powers relay teams also posted season-best times. The big story was the 200 Free Relay team of Dasky, Kristin Ammerman, Lawrence, and Kirtek. In finishing 3rd, the team took nearly 7 seconds off their best time, and qualified for the State Meet which will be held at Eastern Michigan University in two weeks. The 200 Medley Relay team will also head to states. Moriartey, Kirtek, Lawrence, and Dasky finished 4th Saturday. The 400 Free Relay team of Ammerman, Barbara Davidek, Jaquelin Krznarich, and Moriartey posted a time of 4:08.79 in finishing 5th.
Other top finishers for the Chargers at the league meet were: Tessa Peabody (12th – 100 Breast), Jacquelin Krznarich (17th – 200 & 500 Free), Barbara Davidek (18th – 200 & 100 Free), Rylie Dunigan (24th – 200 Free, and 23rd – 500 Free), Kadie Sardo (23rd – 200 IM, and 19th 100 Fly), Kristin Ammerman (18th – 200 IM, and 17th – 100 Fly), and Miranda Graves (22nd – 100 Back).
