Powers senior Sarah Kirtek set a school record in the 100 Butterfly on the first day of the Saginaw Valley League Swimming and Diving Championships. Many Powers swimmers swam their best times of the season, several qualified to swim in the SVL Finals on Saturday, and two more relay teams qualified for the State Meet in Holland later this month.
Following the prelims, Kirtek will be seeded 2nd in the finals for the 100 Butterfly and 100 Breaststroke. She is the defending SVL Champion in the same events. Junior Allie Dasky will be seeded 4th in the 50 & 100 Freestyles after having swum season-best times in both events. Senior Sydney Lawrence swam season-best times and will be seeded 7th in the 50 Free and 13th in the 100 Butterfly. Senior Kristin Ammerman swam season-bests, and qualified for the finals in the 50 & 100 Freestyle. Freshman Hannah Murawski swam bests, and qualified for the finals in the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke. Likewise, senior Tessa Peabody swam a season-best time in qualifying for the finals in the 100 Breaststroke. Finally, first-year diver Sam Snyder had her finest performance of the season, and will be the 6th seed Saturday.
One big goal Coach Robbie Rariden had in mind this season was to have all 3 relays qualified for the State Meet. That goal was reached Thursday evening. Murawski, Kirtek, Lawrence, and Dasky swam a season-best 1:58.69 in the 200 Medley Relay – good for the 2nd seed in Saturday’s SVL finals, and a trip to the State Meet. Likewise, the 400 Freestyle Relay team of Dasky, Lawrence, Ammerman, and Kirtek swam a season-best 3:48.96, which was good for the 3rd seed in Saturday’s finals, and a trip to Holland. The 200 Free Relay team had qualified for the State Meet earlier in the season.
