Powers Catholic Varsity Football bowed out of the state playoffs losing at Williamston 31-7. The Chargers got on the board first when Joey Zorn streaked down the left sideline for 57 yards and a 1st quarter TD. Kyle Chalut added the PAT. The Hornets answered with a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-7 halftime lead.
In the 3rd, the Powers defense forced a three and out on Williamston’s opening possession. Luke Phillpotts returned the ensuing punt 35 yards, but the offense stalled on the Hornet 30. The only score in the 3rd was a field goal that put Williamston up 17-7, a lead the defending District champ protected until about 8 minutes remaining. Their balanced passing and running attack led to two late scores, making the final margin a bit misleading, but Williamston did a great job, especially on 3rd down to keep drives alive.
Brayden Grossi led the Powers receivers with 5 catches and Zorn rushed for 99 yards. Senior Colton Kidd led the tacklers, being in on a career-14.. Linebackers Ben Weishuhn and Cooper Willey had 12 and 11 tackles, respectively. Phillpotts picked off a pass.
The loss snapped the Chargers 5-game winning streak and the 2018 team finished the season with a 7-4 record. Despite the tough ending, TEAM 49 developed into a memorable and fun team to watch play the game of football. Your coaches, parents, and fans salute your grit, character, and effort.
