Coming into the District Title game the Chargers were worried about the methodical style of basketball that Corunna plays at times. They can really get you pressing and chasing after them with their Phil Ford and Dean Smith 4 corners game. The Chargers wanted to be able to combat the style and keep the tempo in their favor. Early on Corunna did exactly what they have been doing of late, knocking down three point shots and keeping the floor really spaced. Logan Lepage had 9 first quarter points for Corunna to give them a 11-9 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Chargers stayed the course and their shooting woke up after being ice cold in the District Semifinal. Jesse Carpenter & Cole Malenich combined for 3 three point field goals in the quarter and Powers would trail Corunna 21-19 at the half.
In the second half the 4 corners came to life early on in the third quarter for Corunna. The Chargers tried to offset it by applying a bit more pressure on the ball. Corunna’s hot shooting from the first half didn’t follow them in the third quarter. The Cavaliers made 5 three point field goals in the first half. They would go 0-7 in the third quarter. Corunna would still hold a slim advantage heading into the fourth quarter 32-31. In the fourth quarter the Chargers would literally wake up. Powers came out aggressive on the defensive end and the intensity would pick up to benefit the Chargers. Powers outscored Corunna 22-9 in the fourth quarter. Owen Lobsinger made 3 three point shots in the 4th quarter with his last coming on a crazy play from Noah Baylis, who found Lobsinger in the corner. Elijah Redds block shot on Logan Lepage would seal the deal and the Chargers made free throws down the stretch to seal the win 53-41.
Powers Catholic won its second straight district championship with the win tonight.
