Powers Catholic Varsity Baseball lost two tough games against Davison on Wednesday (3-1 in eight innings; 5-1 when the Cards broke tie in 7th of game two). Zack Mazza and Sam Assaf turned in solid pitching performances, and Mazza was the Chargers only multi-hit player with three singles.
Against Carman-Ainsworth on Friday, Trevor Maiorana twirled a brilliant 9-strikeout 2-hitter in a 7-0 shutout of the Cavs. Donovan Vanitvelt drilled 3 hits and scored 2 runs. Sam Assaf, Maiorana, and J.D. Garman (3 RBI’S) each added a pair of hits. In the nightcap, Garman’s 2-run HR in the bottom of the 5th, put the Chargers on top 6-5 on their way to a 7-5 comeback win. Vanitvelt added a pair of hits, and Joe Beauchamp stole 4 bases and scored an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, coming home on a Ben McCartney ground ball. Brayden Grossi tossed 3.2 strong innings in his first start of year while Mason Luebke picked up the win with 3.1 innings of scoreless, 6-strikeout relief.
The 17-3-1 Chargers next play on Saturday in the Fenton Wood Bat Tourney.
