In the District semis, Powers used the 8-strikeout, 2-hit pitching performance of Zack Mazza to shutout Birch Run 7-0 for the Chargers tenth-straight win to reach the finals. Joe Beauchamp had two hits and J.D. Garman and Michael Romzek drove in a pair of runs. Quality at-bats and aggressive baserunning gradually wore down the Panthers’ starting pitcher, handing him his first and only loss of the season against eight wins.
In the finals against Clio, after Sam Assaf’s 2-RBI single in the bottom of the first, the wheels fell off for the Chargers as their winning streak and season ended in a perplexing 8-2 defeat.
Despite the loss, the 2019 TEAM added to the Powers Catholic Baseball Tradition with a 27-7 overall record; a conference co-championship;and, completed a three-peat by winning the 50th annual Division One Greater Flint Baseball Tournament again (and again & again). So, “ride on you loyal Chargers,” because you “brought thunder from the sky” on many occasions. Great year, God Bless, thanks to all, and we’ll keep you posted on further baseball news.
