The Chargers snapped a two-game skid with a resounding 49-26 win against SVL rival Saginaw Arthur Hill at Atwood Stadium. At halftime the score was 21-12, but Powers erupted for 28 quick second-half points to stretch the score to 49-12 before the Lumberjacks added a pair of late 4th quarter TD’s.
The Powers Senior Class led the way with the following performances: Nevaeh Sanders, 3 touchdowns (fumble recovery in the end zone on an errant punt snap; 30-yard touchdown pass from Luke Phillpotts; 34-yard run); Phillpotts ran 30 yards for a TD; scored on a 20-yard reception from Marcus Groves; and, intercepted a pass; Groves also connected with Elijah Redds on a 45-yard TD strike; Holden Warner led the rushing attack with 83 yards and a TD; and, Emily Lendzion made her debut as a field goal kicker by drilling 7 out of 7 extra point attempts. Mason Leubke stepped in as long-snapper for Gabe Radgens, who missed the game the game due to injury.
Ben Weishuhn led the defensive tacklers, and was aided by Hollister Fechik, Ben McCartney, and Warner who were each in on a handful of tackles.
The 4-2 Chargers continue to push for the playoffs at Houston Stadium (Carpenter Rd.) next Friday versus the Flint HS Jaguars. Game time has been moved up to 5 p.m. because of concerns about the mosquito virus plaguing several states.
