Girls Swimming & Diving Makes Big Noise and Sets Records at Saturday’s State Championships:
This past Saturday during the state Swimming & Diving Championships at Lake Orion High School the Powers Catholic girls swimming & diving team made a strong argument for being known as the best girls swimming & diving team in Powers Catholic school history. Eight girls, ( Lara Wujciak, Abby Merz, Olivia Camara, Emily Snyder, Kate Iordanou, Lauren Taylor, Emily Bhagat, alt. Hanna Potochny). Led by coach Chase Harvey and assistant Olivia Gregson set records and accomplished heights that Powers Catholic girls swimming & diving will forever be proud.
Highlights from Saturday’s meet:
Individual Performances:
– Lara Wujciak took 1st (State Champion) in the 100 Fly and 3rd in the 100 Backstroke (AllState Team)

– Abby Merz took 13th in the 100 Breaststroke and 24th in the 200 IM

– Lauren Taylor took 16th in the 100 Fly and 20th in the 200 IM

– Emily Snyder took 3rd in Diving (Allstate Team)

Team Performances:
– 200 Medley Relay placed 8th place (Lara Wujciak, Abby Merz, Lauren Taylor & Olivia Camara) (Allstate Team)

– 200 Freestyle Relay ( Olivia Camara, Emily Bhagat, Abby Merz & Lara Wujciak) took 9th place and broke the school record

– 400 Freestyle Relay – (Emily Bhagat, Emily Snyder, Katelyn Iordanou & Lauren Taylor) took 17th place

– The Swimming & Diving Team team placed 8th overall out of 36 teams competing
Other Highlights:
– First time the team has brought 3 relays to State Meet in school history
– The first All State diver in many years (potentially since the 80’s)
– First State Champion in 8 years for Powers Catholic
– Tied the 2013 team for the best placement at State Meet since 1982 and 3rd best finish in school history

– Moved up 10 spots from the prior years finish at 18th place
