Everyone was looking forward to opening night for the 2018/2019 basketball season. The Chargers had garnered some preseason hype from across the state and some even had them ranked as a top 20 team in the state. The Student section was buzzing and you could feel the energy in the air.
Linden who is one of the favorites to win the Metro League this year was also looking forward to this contest and showed why early. The player of the year in 2017/2018 season Blake Lund got the Eagles on the board early with 5 points in the first 3 minutes of the game. The Chargers however couldn’t get anything going by playing terribly sloppy and committing 9 turnovers in the 1st quarter. Linden led 15-5 at the end of the quarter. The second quarter started better for the Chargers as Sophomore Owen Lobsinger banged a three pointer to cut into Linden’s lead. After a dismal 5 point first quarter Powers Catholic would score 14 in the second quarter. Linden would also have a strong second quarter and built a lead of 13 points. Elijah Redds buzzer beating floater would give Linden a 28-19 lead at the half. Blake Lund has 16 points in the first half for Linden.
As the second half begin the Chargers would commit another turnover. The Chargers committed 15 turnovers in the first half alone. The Chargers would show life behind Junior Luke Phillpotts. Phillpotts scored 7 points in the quarter and his energy got Powers Catholic going. The Chargers would cut the deficit to 38-35 to end the 3rd quarter. In the 4th period Linden would answer the Chargers run. Dalton Davidson’s steak and basket would cut the Linden lead to 1 but that is as close as the Chargers would get. Linden would answer with 3 three point field goals in the final quarter and steal a win on the road. The Chargers would limit Lund in the second half holding him scoreless. Lund led Linden with 16 points, 5 steals and 6 rebounds.
Owen Lobsinger has 22 points, 6 rebounds, 2 blocks and 4 steals. Luke Phillpotts had 16 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals. Elijah Redds had 5 pts, 8 rebounds and a team high 7 deflections. Powers Catholic shot 39% from the floor and 16% from the 3. The Chargers also didn’t help themselves committing 19 turnovers and going 4-11 from the foul line.
The Chargers gear back up Tuesday December 4 vs rival Flushing at 7:00 at home. This one should be exciting since last years contest was won by the Chargers on a Makai Conner buzzer beating 3 pointer in overtime.
