Powers Catholic and Hamady would square off in quarterfinal play at Districts Monday night. The Hamady Hawks under the guidance of long time flint product Embery Pope came into Goggins field house with a confident bunch. Hamady has young talent with two freshman guards who could be pretty good in the years to come. Early on in the contest Hamady took a lead 9-8 over the Chargers. The first game in the tournament is sometimes the hardest ones to play because of the anxiousness. Powers Catholic took a 15-11 lead after the first frame on a steal and dunk by Erick Coffey. In the second quarter the Chargers started to take control defensively. Powers Catholic would hold Hamady to just 7 second quarter points and force the Hawks to countless turnovers and missed shots. The Chargers took a 33-18 lead going into the half.

In the second half the Chargers came out intent on building its lead. Jesse Carpenter drive and layup brought the Chargers to a 37-21 lead and Powers Catholic would outscore the Hawks 15-10 to end the third period. In the final period the Chargers continued its stellar play. There was a bit of sloppiness in the later part of the game but the Chargers held on to win 68-51.

Powers Catholic held Hamady to just 33% from the field and outscored the Hawks 48-28 in points in the paint against Hamady’s zone defense. The Chargers had 3 players in double figures with Nevaeh Sanders 12 points, Luke Phillpotts 11 points & Jesse Carpenter 13 points. Phillpotts also had 8 rebounds and Carpenter had 4 assist. The Chargers now advance to face Ortonville Brandon on Wednesday in the district semifinal game at 7:30 PM.
