What a night for Powers Catholic Varsity Chargers! It was a tense night in the Midland High School gymnasium as the Chemics met the Chargers for the last match of regular season: the SVL Crossover. Despite a rowdy student section and some scoring issues, the Chargers were able to pull out a final victory (and the third consecutive crossover win) before Districts.
For set 1, PCAT defeated the Chemics handily, 25-14. Set 2, Midland fought back, but the Chargers still took the win, 25-23. Set 3 proved a little bit trickier. After a scoring issue that caused a bit of a commotion, the Chargers came back and almost took a W, but lost 21-25 after being behind 15-25 before replaying game point. Set 4 was an L for Powers Catholic, 20-25, forcing a fifth set. The Chargers took a lead and ran away with it, winning the last set 15-9, and winning the overall match.
Offensively, senior Reilly Evans led the Chargers with 12 kills. Sophomore Madison Gebhardt had 9 kills, senior Gaby Clark had 8, senior Mariah Brenz had 6, and senior Madison Speer had 4. Brenz also had 24 assists, while junior setter Madeline Curless had 9. The team had 9 serving aces collectively for the night.
Defensively, Speer had 8 blocks while Evans and Gebhardt also contributed with several assists and 2 solo blocks a piece. Gebhardt had 21 digs for the night while Clark had 13. Brenz also contributed 12 digs and junior Ava Stravato had 10 as libero.
