The Powers Catholic basketball team has had aspirations towards being back in a Regional Final game since last season’s lost vs Bridgeport. There were 5 returning players from that team (Lobsinger, Hagerman, Malenich, Feick & Seay) and 3 other players who came up from JV for the tournament run (Davidson, Redds & Phillpotts). Phillpotts actually played spot duty minutes due to injuries last year in the regular season. You can never look ahead but the goals have been set since the beginning of the year. The Chargers wanted to be sure they could fulfill those aspirations vs Garber Tuesday night.
The Chargers started off the game very strong. Junior Noah Baylis who would have himself a night got the Chargers on the board first with a layup in the lane. The Chargers jumped out 9-2 early on. Garber would get back in the game on the offensive glass, Manny Jopich & Riley Day were the culprits behind getting Garber back into the game. The Chargers held on to a 15-10 first quarter lead. In the second quarter Garber’s offense would begin to catch a good feel into the game. Garber exploded for 23 second quarter points. Leading Scorer Jacob Denham who was averaging close to 17 points per game had 9 points in the 2nd quarter. The Chargers offense was still productive but their defense which had been strong in both district games went away in the first half tonight. The Chargers led 34-33 at the half. In both district games the Chargers gave up 41 points in the game only to Corunna.
In the second half the Charger defense that had been showcased in Mt. Morris at the district games came into play. The Chargers held Garber to just 11 points in the third quarter and scored 23 points of their own. Noah Baylis had 11 of his game high 25 points in the third quarter. Hot shooting from Jesse Carpenter and the Chargers stretched their lead 57-44 to end the quarter. In the fourth quarter the Chargers continued to keep their foot on the gas on the defensive end. Garber would be held to just 6 points with 1:30 seconds left in the quarter. Once the lead grew the Chargers took advantage of their quickness and got layups by attacking the basket. Lobsinger had 8 of his 10 points in the fourth quarter and the Chargers cruised to a 71-57 win.
Noah Baylis led the Chargers with 25 points on 11/12 shooting from the field, Luke Phillpotts had 13 points & 10 rebounds & Owen Lobsinger had 10 points. Sophomore Jesse Carpenter has continued his hot shooting by knocking down 3 three point field goals. Major kudos to Senior Malik Seay who changed the game around in the third quarter with his defensive energy. Garber was led by Manny Jopich 12 points & Riley Day 13 points & 6 rebounds. Leading scorer Jacob Denham had 11 points but was just 4-16 from the field. The Chargers advance to the regional final game on Thursday vs Alma. Alma knocked off undefeated Bridgeport 64-56. Tip off will be at 7:00 PM on Thursday back at Alma High School.
