Powers Catholic High School 18th 36

The Powers Girls Swim and Dive Team had a successful run at the MHSAA Division 3 State Championship at Oakland University on Friday and Saturday, finishing 18th of 47 teams. This is the highest finish for the Chargers since 2013 and up 11 spots from just last year.
The meet began early Friday with preliminary rounds in all events. The top 16 finishers in each event, including diving, returned Saturday for finals. Competition was very tough and prelims proved to be challenging for the Charger girls, but they were able to send several individuals and a relay on for Saturday. Abby Merz qualified for finals in both the 200 IM and the 100 breast. Lara Wujciak and Lauren Taylor both qualified in the 100 butterfly, and Emily Snyder qualified through to finals in diving. The 200 Free Relay team of Lara Wujciak, Olivia Camara, Lauren Taylor and Abby Merz also swam fast enough for a finals appearance.
The OU natatorium was full of energy on Saturday and the Charger girls came through with some great performances. On the diving side, Emily Snyder finished strong in 11th place. In the individual events, Abby Merz took 14th in the 200 IM after a personal best prelims race and 15th in the 100 breast. Lara Wujciak bounced back on Saturday to take 5th overall in the 100 fly, while Lauren Taylor jumped from her seeded position and posted a personal best for a 12th place finish in the same event. The race of the year for the Chargers was the 200 Free Relay of Wujciak, Camara, Taylor, and Merz who broke the Powers School Record set in 2016 by 0.05 seconds. Way to go Chargers and congrats on a great season!
