The Charger Girls Swim and Dive team brought grit, determination, and talent to the SVL Championship meet this week and it showed. The meet was reconfigured due to Covid-19, which unfortunately did not allow the entire team to attend. Typically this meet is conducted with a preliminary round for all swimmers and divers from every team and a final round consisting of the top 24. This year, only the top 18 from each event were invited to attend for a single final round. The Chargers made the most of this format, despite illness and quarantine having an impact on the team, and placed third after the much larger Grand Blanc and Midland Dow teams. Highlights from the meet are numerous and are as follows:
-A new school record set in the 200 Medley Relay by Lara Wujciak (back), Abby Merz (breast), Lauren Taylor (fly), and Olivia Camara (free). The same four broke the 200 Free Relay school record in 2019.
-Lara Wujciak was a two-event champion (100 Backstroke and 100 Butterfly). Wujciak is a four-time SVL champion in the 100 Butterfly. She broke her own 100 Fly record multiple times over the past few years, including yesterday, where she went a 56.59. That time broke her own meet record from 2019 as well as the HH Dow pool record. Wujciak’s performance yesterday gave her the shared honor of “Swimmer of the Meet”.
-Abby Merz was also an individual meet champion in the 100 Breaststroke. Merz is a four-time SVL champion in that event. She also took a 2nd place finish in the 200 IM.
-The 400 Freestyle Relay with Emily Bhagat, Katelyn Iordanou, Emily Snyder, and Lauren Taylor earned the state qualifying time yesterday. This is the first time in at least 20 years, and possibly ever, that the Chargers will send all three relays to the State Championship.
-Lauren Taylor earned her second individual state qualifying time of the season in the 200 Individual Medley.
-Emily Snyder, who can impressively do dual duty as a top diver and swimmer placed 3rd in the Diving portion and will move on to the Regional Qualifying Meet on November 12th in St. John. She is hoping to return to the state championship in diving. She’s a first-time state qualifier in the 400 medley relay for swimming. It is exceedingly rare for an athlete to qualify in both swimming and diving.
-First Team All-SVL honors were awarded to Lara Wujciak, Abby Merz and Lauren Taylor
-Second Team All-SVL honors were awarded to Olivia Camara, Emily Snyder, Hannah Erpelding, Emily Bhagat, and Emma Potochny
-Honorable Mention was awarded to Hannah Potochny
